Today, we’re looking back at some of the vibrant conversations we had in 2024 with thought leaders in our field, who reminded us that solidarity, collective belonging, and resilience are central to navigating economic and societal challenges. From the revival of Black co-ops to addressing burnout and overcoming “othering,” these interviews highlight the power of community, equity, and shared responsibility in building a more inclusive and just future.
First, as Black co-ops enter a fourth wave of expansion ([link removed]) , economic historian Jessica Gordon Nembhard shared lessons learned from the first three. Next, the climate catastrophe demands struggle between those who enforce the status quo and the rest of us who are exhausted by it. But how can we turn struggle into power ([link removed]) ? Then, Beth Kanter, author of The Happy, Healthy Nonprofit, talks with NPQ about the widespread problem of nonprofit burnout ([link removed]) . That’s followed by an article on how solidarity ([link removed]) might help nonprofits, movement groups, and philanthropy build a world centered
on racial and economic justice. Finally, creating a world of belonging without othering ([link removed]) , john a. powell contends, is both possible and necessary to overcoming the rising threat of authoritarianism.
