GOP Rep. Thomas Massie says he won't vote for Mike Johnson no matter what: "You can pull all my fingernails out" and "shove bamboo up in them"
We could do without the weird torture-porn fetish, but we'll go ahead and put you down as a "NO," Thomas. With a razor-thin Republican majority in the House, embattled GOP Speaker Mike Johnson can only afford to lose a couple votes or his bid to retain the gavel will be doomed. Looks like it's déjà vu all over again!

Murder rates drop for third year in a row as Trump complains nation is "breaking down"
Despite the MAGA cult leader's apoplectic screeds falsely declaring otherwise, violent crime and murder rates continue to drop in the United States, having reached historic highs in 2020 (during Trump's first term in office, mind you). Although Trump declared in a Truth Social post Thursday that the US is "breaking down" with violence, blaming the current administration’s "open borders," data shows that rates of violent crime and murder actually plummeted in 2024. Data from the Real-Time Crime Index from January through October 2024, collected from over 300 law enforcement agencies across the country, reveals that murder rates have dropped by nearly 16 percent from 2023 and by nearly 25 percent from 2022 in the same periods. But let's not let pesky facts get in the way of incessant demagoguery. Donald's got a super-scary narrative to sell and some good, old-fashioned fascism on deck to fix it!

Trump launches full-scale attack on education
MoveOn: Donald Trump and his radical cronies like Linda McMahon and Vivek Ramaswamy want to ABOLISH the Department of Education, stripping away all protections for LGBT students and turning our public schools into for-profit scams. Will you add your name to demand he stop his efforts to kill the Department of Education?
Trump returns to bizarre obsession in midnight message: "Get rid of windmills!"
With the myriad complex challenges facing the world in 2025, it's good to know our president-elect is truly focused on what matters most in these perilous times — taking on Big Wind! In a signature, late-night social media screed, the MAGA cult leader thumb-smashed: "The UK is making a very big mistake. Open up the North Sea. Get rid of Windmills!" Trump's obsession with wind turbines — which he falsely blames for a variety of domestic and foreign policy ills — originates from a dispute he had with the Scottish Parliament over a North Sea wind farm overlooked by his golf course outside Aberdeen, Scotland. And there it is. When Donald takes a stand, it's always personal. The man is nothing if not consistent in looking out for the interests of exactly one person — himself.

Bernie Sanders accuses Musk of seeking cheaper, not brainier, immigrant labor with H-1B visas
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders weighed in on the H-1B visa controversy Thursday, accusing Elon Musk of defending the program because the labor is "cheaper," not brainier, than the American labor force, as the tech billionaire has argued. The debate over the H-1B visa has sparked a civil war of sorts within MAGA over the past week. The mega-billionaire ketamine enthusiast has backed the visas for skilled foreign workers while white nationalist trash pals Laura Loomer and Steve Bannon have bashed the program as not putting (white) American workers first and carving them out of higher-paying jobs. Laser-focused as ever on class disparities in the United States, Sanders wrote, "Elon Musk is wrong. The main function of the H-1B visa program is not to hire 'the best and the brightest,' but rather to replace good-paying American jobs with low-wage indentured servants from abroad." Sanders called for major reforms to the visa program, adding the "cheaper the labor they hire, the more money the billionaires make."

Musk suggests he’s prepared to sue media over coverage of Cybertruck explosion
The world's richest man-toddler appeared Thursday to threaten the media with lawsuits if he doesn't like the way they're reporting the Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel and Tower Las Vegas on New Year’s Day. Musk earlier bragged that the perpetrator, who rigged a rented Cybertruck with fireworks mortars, gasoline, and camping gas canisters and drove it the Trump property, had chosen the wrong vehicle for a "terrorist attack" and credited the design of his vehicle with minimizing damage from the explosion. Maybe so, maybe not. We're guessing Elon really just doesn't like this image existing in general — a glaring, prescient metaphor of everything bound to go wrong on account of his unholy alliance with the MAGA cult leader.
FBI concludes the suspect in the deadly New Orleans truck attack acted alone
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the driver of the pickup truck who plowed into a crowd in New Orleans on New Year's Day, killing at least 14 people and injuring dozens, acted alone and there is no other threat around the Bourbon Street area, the FBI said Thursday. Jabbar, a 42-year-old Army veteran from Houston, was killed in a gunfire exchange with police following the attack, which is being investigated as "an act of terrorism," agency officials said. This is a change in the FBI's initial assessment on Wednesday that it was likely Jabbar did not act alone and the agency was searching for information that could lead to additional suspects who may have aided in the attack.
Recordings by New Orleans attack suspect express extreme religious views
Nearly a year before he killed 14 people and injured dozens more by driving a pickup truck flying an Islamic State flag through a crowd of New Year's revelers in New Orleans, Texas-born Shamsud-Din Jabbar expressed his beliefs that music, intoxicants, sex, and other pleasures were evils deserving of destruction. An account on the SoundCloud platform under the name of Jabbar posted three recordings totaling about 20 minutes each containing those and other expressions of extremist religious views. Muslim scholars have widely rejected the extremist positions ISIS or those who sympathize with the terrorist group have with respect to the religion, saying Islam teaches mercy and peace as well as the importance of justice. Alluding to reports that Jabbar had previously faced accusations of engaging in some of the behavior he condemns in the recordings, including drunk-driving and spousal abuse, a statement from the Council on American-Islamic Relations on Thursday said: "His crime is the latest example of why cruel, merciless, bottom-feeding extremist groups have been rejected by the overwhelming majority of the Muslim world — from Islamic scholars, to mosques, to organizations and to individual Muslims."
LA Times owner reportedly spoke with Rob Schneider about creating a "MAGA-friendly" version of "The View"
The owner of the Los Angeles Times, Patrick Soon-Shiong, reportedly spoke with actor, comedian, and Adam Sandler hanger-on Rob Schneider about creating a "MAGA-friendly" version of ABC’s The View. Schneider, who apparently met with Soon-Shiong and RFK Jr.'s wife Cheryl Hines to discuss the project, announced the launch of No Apologies Media last month and said the company would develop "an all-ladies talk show that won't be like the The View" to be hosted by conservative "household names." Mmmm, sounds like must-miss TV!
Clarence Thomas escapes accountability — again
Citing amendments the thoroughly corrupt Supreme Court justice made to his annual financial disclosure reports following a damning exposé by ProPublica, the secretary to the US Judicial Conference — the federal judiciary's top policymaking body — rejected a request by Democratic lawmakers to refer Thomas to the Department of Justice to examine claims that he failed to disclose gifts and travel provided by his billionaire sugar-daddy, GOP megadonor Harlan Crow. In a statement, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse criticized the judicial branch's response to his request concerning Thomas, saying it was "shirking its statutory duty to hold a Supreme Court justice accountable for ethics violations." And just like that, Thomas walks scot-free. Again. Unconscionable.
Ohio governor signs bill to charge the public to access police cam footage
The idea that the public should have to pay for video footage of public servants recorded on cameras that are ALSO paid for by the public is absolutely preposterous — and an obvious attempt to make it more difficult to access one of of the most important tools we have to hold police accountable for their actions. It's been less than a week since we saw bodycam footage of correctional officers beating a Black inmate to death in New York, a grim reminder of how important it is for the public to be able to access this footage — and how Republicans are not only complicit but actively encourage and reward the abhorrent excesses of state violence.
