Avian influenza (bird flu)
Bird
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has advised avian influenza (bird flu) is causing waterfowl deaths throughout the state, including geese in Oswego.
IDNR and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) have asked people not to handle or attempt to capture sick waterfowl or other wild birds. Due to the risk of infection, pets and other animals should be kept away from bird carcasses that may have died due to avian flu.
If you need to remove a deceased bird from your yard, IDPH recommends the following steps to protect yourself and others. Wear a mask and use disposable gloves or an inverted plastic bag to collect the bird. Double bag the carcass in plastic bags and seal the bag before placing it in your waste toter for disposal by Groot, the Village’s waste contractor. Anyone handling deceased birds should thoroughly wash their hands, clothes and any tools with soap and water after disposal.
IDNR will continue to monitor for deaths from avian flu in Oswego and throughout the state during the seasonal bird migration. Please report five or more deceased birds found at one location to IDNR district wildlife biologists [ [link removed] ].
