Dear John,

There’s no question that 2024 was a pivotal year for global freedom.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve seen the steady erosion of political and internet freedoms, witnessed horrific conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar, and raised alarms about the spread of antidemocratic trends.

While these developments are discouraging, around the world, people stood strong against violence and repression. From Europe to the Americas, voters made their voices heard, and even in the harshest circumstances, human rights defenders charted new strategies to build a better future.

As we look ahead to the coming year, here are five developments that give us hope.

Election Watch: Belarus

On January 26, the Belarusian government will hold an openly rigged presidential election, the first since President Alyaksandr Lukashenka's fraudulent 2020 reelection that sparked mass protests. With the opposition either imprisoned or in exile, no candidates pose a real challenge to Lukashenka.

Junior Fellowship Opportunity

Freedom House is seeking motivated candidates for the eight-month Freedom in the World 2025-2026 Junior Fellowship program. Junior Fellows will work closely with the Research and Analysis team to ensure the flagship report meets high standards of quality and integrity, while gaining valuable, marketable skills for their future careers.
