What We’re Reading
In The Future We Will... We've built an entire economy on buying stuff and the accompanying debt, so what happens when people decide they don't want to buy anything anymore? A spirit of frugality — washing plastic bags for reuse and making bread — has seized the nation, but it's old news for poor people, who wonder whether people will keep doing it after the crisis. The future is also of interest to urbanists, but many of their proposals could set us up for repeats of inequalities.

Kept Behind. There's a diabetes-related amputation epidemic in the Black South and a doctor is fighting to save patients from preventable procedures. Undocumented restaurant workers in Los Angeles speak out about their conditions under coronavirus. As a growing number of cities try and fail to serve people experiencing homelessness, a look at the capitalist systems that made the streets so cruel.

Serving Time With COVID. Thousands of incarcerated people in California's overcrowded prisons have COVID-19 and it could have been prevented. At a women's prison in New York, people are fighting for their lives, sometimes by themselves in solitary. Mentally ill defendents are facing their own challenges, as both prison and mental health facilities are dangerous and courts won't just let them out to await trial.

The Unbearable Whiteness of Cooking
illustration of two people cooking

The food world is full of white influencers who say they're inspired by the culinary traditions of India, Mexico, China, and much, much more. Their appropriative dishes and empires are smash hits, but what about diversity and inclusion in the culinary world? At a time when so many of us are cooking at home, some home cooks wish they saw more people who looked like them in YouTube, recipe blogs, and culinary magazines.
