Halibut Industry Fishing Year 2025 Management Webinar

The Maine DMR will be holding a webinar Monday, January 13, 2025 at 6:00p.m to discuss potential 2025 Atlantic halibut management with industry members.

Northeast Multispecies (groundfish) Fishery Management Plan

At its December meeting, the New England Fishery Management Council took final action on Framework 69 to the Northeast Multispecies Fishery Management Plan. Framework 69 includes the groundfish annual catch limits (ACLs) for the 2025 fishing year. In response to the 2024 management track stock assessment, the halibut US ABC was set at 35mt, a 55% reduction from the 2024 US ABC, and the FY2025 state waters sub-component was reduced to 9.1mt.

Maine DMR sets management for the Maine halibut fishery based on the state waters sub-component. Examples of halibut fishery management measures includes seasons, number of tags, and hook limits. Prior to rulemaking, the DMR is seeking industry input on the type of measures to focus on and how to balance the lower quota with the desire to maintain access to the state waters fishery.
