John,

A recent poll found that about 26% of Connecticut residents are “very” or “somewhat” concerned about having enough food to eat. Food banks across our state are experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand. And in April, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) enrollment increased after a gradual decline in net monthly enrollment.

That’s why I’m fighting to expand SNAP benefits during this crisis, including revising the requirements for calculating income under the SNAP program to exclude unemployment funds received from the federal government under the CARES Act.

SNAP helps prevent families from going hungry AND bolsters our economy. We have to make sure we do not block families that are receiving badly-needed relief from critical nutrition programs. Can you add your name to my petition if you are with me on this?

Growing up, my family struggled in the predictable cycle of poverty. We relied on public assistance like food stamps to make ends meet. It was because of these programs that I could grow, succeed, and get the education that helped propel me forward.

I know what it feels like to worry that a paycheck might not cover the bills. I understand how important SNAP benefits are for millions of families – especially during a national crisis like the one we are facing today.

That’s why I am working urgently in Congress to protect and expand the benefits Connecticut families so badly need to get through this crisis. Sign on if you agree: We need to protect and expand SNAP benefits during the coronavirus pandemic.

Thank you!
