Suicide has long been a leading cause of death in our country –– but the movement to prevent suicide has gained momentum, and it’s thanks to the generous support of people like you. By giving to AFSP, you help make possible everything we do in the fight against suicide: reaching communities across the country with our prevention education and loss support programs; mobilizing volunteers advocating for impactful suicide prevention and mental health legislation at the state and local level; investing in science as the largest private funder of suicide prevention research; creating a culture that’s smart about mental health through our national awareness campaigns; and connecting people through our 73 local chapters across the country.

There is no better reflection of who we are than our dedicated volunteers. One such example is national board member Lisa Riley, who first connected with AFSP in 2004 following the loss of her friend Rita. Here, Lisa shares why she feels people should give to AFSP:

“It’s been many years since I participated in one of AFSP’s International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day events. Sitting there with other loss survivors this year, I remembered how 20 years ago, a fellow survivor urged me to get involved and stand with her in the fight to prevent suicide. It was a call to action that inspired me to do everything I could to support those impacted by suicide, and to fund the programs and research so desperately needed to save lives.

It is the community of people engaged in this mission that AFSP brings together that has kept me involved all these years, knowing we are collectively making an enormous difference. And so, all these years later, I am at a place in my own journey where I ask those reading this: will you stand with me in the fight to prevent suicide, by giving to AFSP? Together, we can and will make a difference. By donating to AFSP, you help make possible our mission: to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.”

Here's what we accomplished this past year alone:

Over 147,000 individuals reached through suicide prevention programs.
309 International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day events representing all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and 24 international sites.
$7.5M invested in a total of 34 new research studies.
20 State bills became laws with the help of Volunteer Advocates.
