Former Democrat Majority Leader Passes Away
|
Over the weekend we learned the sad news Senator Kari Dziedzic succumbed to ovarian cancer. Senator Dziedzic was a young 62 years old. We pray strength and comfort for her family as they cope with her passing.
The MN Senate is now evenly split with 33 Republicans and 33 Democrats. On Monday, Gov. Walz called a special election to fill the two-years remaining in the Senate term of District 60 which includes most of northeast and southeast Minneapolis, Cedar-Riverside, the University of Minnesota, and Augsburg University. The special election will be held on January 28th.

Court Deems Democrat House Candidate Ineligible to Take Office
|
Last week Judge Leonardo Castro ruled Rep.-Elect Curtis Johnson was ineligible to take office due to his not living in the district he ran for. It is a requirement a person running for MN House or Senate live in the district a minimum of six-months immediately preceding the election. Because Curtis Johnson failed to meet the residency requirement, he was barred from taking office.
Curtis Johnson decided not to appeal the ruling but instead released a public statement last Friday that he is “resigning” from the seat. The statement can be read at the following link here.
Gov. Walz then issued a Writ of Special Election to “fill a vacancy” in the House District, also Friday last week. The Writ Gov. Walz issued can be read at the following link.
|
First, Curtis Johnson cannot resign from a seat he doesn't hold. Curtis Johnson would not have been sworn in to the office until Noon on January 14, 2025. Until that time, Curtis Johnson does not hold an office.
Second, Gov. Walz’s action to call a special election is a violation of MN election law because there is zero vacancy to fill. The current State Representative for the House District in question is Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn who holds the office until Noon on January 14, 2025. Gov. Walz cannot legally call a special election for a non-vacant seat.
Curtis Johnson deliberately used the term “resign” in his written statement so as to create a false appearance of legality to Gov. Walz’s action of calling a special election. Further, Secretary of State Steve Simon indicated although there is no vacancy, there is an "Imminent Vacancy" which allows them to operate as if there is a vacancy.
An “imminent vacancy” is not the same as a “vacancy.” Gov. Walz’s calling a special election based on an imminent vacancy is not legal. The actions of Democrats are nothing more than a scheme to knowingly break the law in a power play cloaked in false appearances.

Senator Mitchell Refuses to Resign
|
The Federalist Papers were essays written by three important founding fathers of our great country. The essays were written as guiding ideas for our country as we entered into our new Constitutional Republic. In Federalist 57, the author wrote "the aim of every political constitution is, or ought to be, first to obtain for rulers men who possess most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue, the common good of the society; and in the next place, to take the most effectual precautions for keeping them virtuous whilst they continue to hold their public trust."
Democrats in Minnesota have repeatedly broken this very ideal set forth by our founding fathers by continuing to keep Sen. Nicole Mitchell in power in the MN Senate after Sen. Mitchell was charged with felony burglary. Our founding documents along with Senate rules call for Senators to be held to the "Highest standard of ethical conduct." This expectation is required because legislative officeholders must be held accountable for any wrong doing. Senators must be held to a higher ethical standard. Unfortunately, too many Democrats allow their decision making to be guided by obtaining and retaining power rather than maintaining ethical standards and rule of law.
Sen. Mitchell should have been expelled months ago but Democrats protected her. When session begins, Sen. Mitchell's time will be split between her criminal court case and representing her Woodbury area district.

Phony Blue Dogs Coalition
|
A group of Democrats in the MN Senate recently announced they are ready to moderate and play ball with Republicans after ramming through their radical leftwing agenda AND just in time for the next election in 2026. This sort of artificial shift to the right is comical considering the votes these members specifically took last year including the failed marijuana equity license lottery, free healthcare, college, and drivers licenses for illegal immigrants, delivery fees for online purchases, dozens of mandates on schools, and a last minute, massive 1,400-page bill that destroyed the trust and reputation of the Senate. To top it off, these Democrat Senators voted to pass policies and laws that squandered the 18 billion dollar surplus and put our state on a course for large projected deficits. This announcement is just another example of their phony politicking.

Governor Tim Walz and legislative Democrats made high-tax, high-cost Minnesota even more unaffordable. People continue fleeing as a result to enjoy high-quality life at lower cost.
