I recognize that you have heard from us A LOT lately.
I felt it was important to keep you informed and let you know how you can help, because during this unprecedented time our work has been even more urgent. From breaking news to urgent calls to action, you stood with us and fought for people who needed help through your amazing generosity, support and involvement. From the bottom of our hearts, we cannot thank you enough.
It’s because of your constant support that we’ve been able to help real people and check the dangerous power of corrupt corporations and the government institutions they control. And because the flow of information may have been overwhelming, I thought it’d be nice to check in with you and share some of our recent strategic fights and wins. It’s amazing to think about what we’ve accomplished together in just the past few weeks alone. With your support, we:
Led the fight to stop water shutoffs in Washington D.C., 16 states, and nearly 700 cities and towns across the country — protecting 211 million Americans — 65% of the U.S. population;
Mobilized more than 30,000 people to demand Congress oppose a Big Oil bailout;
Demanded that EPA and USDA step up to enforce basic protections for our food, water and environment;
Fought to enforce basic safety protocols and provide safety equipment for the people who process and inspect our food, to protect their health and help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
To date, we've held 30 virtual events to engage our volunteers and supporters on water, food and climate protection.
Your ongoing support has kept us focused on what we need to do to protect people and our planet, and we’re seeing your commitment pay off — at the federal, state and local level:
Then, on Saturday, May 16, after almost four years of mobilizing, grassroots activists and local residents in central New Jersey won a tremendous victory against a multi-billion-dollar fossil fuel company when the state rejected the Northeast Supply Enhancement Project (NESE) pipeline and compressor station.
You made each of these victories possible, through your petition signatures, letters to representatives, calls to leadership and donations. Even though we are in the middle of a global public health crisis, we can’t stop fighting to protect our water, food and climate:
As President Trump is recklessly rolling back protections and selling off our public lands, we are working tirelessly to protect public lands — such as Chaco Canyon — from oil & gas drilling.
We are taking the Trump administration to court to fight the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) rollback so that climate change keeps being CONSIDERED as part of NEPA’s protections.
We are using all available tools, from legal to legislative to organizing, to stop Trump’s repeal of protections for half of America’s wetlands and millions of miles of streams.
We're fighting to pass two landmark pieces of legislation: The aptly named Ban Fracking Act will ban fracking nationally, and the Farm System Reform Act will modernize American agriculture and ban factory farms.
In what feels like such a terrible time, I hope you join me in taking real pride in knowing you have had such an enormous positive impact. It also fills me with hope for the future — that we can build the power needed to create a world where everyone has access to safe food, clean drinking water and a livable climate.
