I know a 17% drop may sound like a lot, but it won’t get us to the 7.6% emissions decrease we need to see every year to avoid the worst effects of climate change. Plus, emissions are bound to bounce back up as countries reopen.
Even with a near global lockdown of flights, factories, and highway traffic, the world still generated more than 80% of its usual carbon pollution. This is how we know our individual behavior won’t stop climate change. We need systemic change.
We need to invest in a green stimulus in response to this coronavirus recession. We need to enact a Green New Deal to build the infrastructure necessary for a net-zero emissions future. And we need to elect Senators who will champion this vision.
