John,
Happy New Year’s Eve! As we enter the final hours of 2024, I find myself reflecting on my journey to Congress, which has been somewhat unconventional.
When my husband and I were both working full-time, and our boys were young, I would get off the night shift at the Chapel Hill Police Department at 7am, I would go straight to their classrooms to volunteer.
I couldn’t help but notice the students, especially Black and brown kids, were being underserved. So, I did everything I could as a volunteer to ensure no student was left behind — but I knew I had to run for School Board to make a lasting difference.
On the School Board, I fought tooth and nail for better funding for our schools. But eventually, I knew I had to run for Orange County Commissioner to make critical changes.
As Orange County Commissioner, I championed the construction of two schools, two senior centers, and affordable housing initiatives — but, eventually, I knew the next step to securing long-term progress for our children’s and communities’ future was running for State House.
All these twists and turns culminated in me representing my home district in Congress, John. I got into this line of work in pursuit of building a better life for my community and followed my heart throughout every single step.
There’s still SO much more I can do. If you’re with me in the fight to continue making progress for the people and communities that we love — will you chip in $10 or more to help me finish this year strong?
