For nearly 20 months, the war in Sudan has triggered a major humanitarian catastrophe in the country, mainly affecting women and children.

Among the 12 million displaced people are 272,000 pregnant women fleeing for their lives, who cannot access critical maternal health care. 91,000 of them will give birth in the next three months.

“After giving birth, I worry about the cold and that I don’t have a proper place to put my baby. We don’t have a house, we sleep outside on the ground,” said Sabreen, a displaced Sudanese mother of three and nine months pregnant with her fourth child.

“As I approach my due date, I worry about whether it will be a normal delivery or a caesarean section. The thought of having to have a caesarean section terrifies me because I cannot afford the cost,” said Najwa, a displaced Sudanese woman who is eight months pregnant.

“We had to leave our villages. At the time, I was nine months pregnant, and armed men destroyed the health centres, so I had to leave,” said Lana, a displaced Sudanese mother of a newborn.

UNFPA has been on the ground in Sudan deploying mobile health clinics and midwives in areas of high need and where access to health and protection services is limited.

Gifts from donors have helped deliver essential medicines and equipment to midwives, kept the doors open on UNFPA mobile health clinics, and provided new mothers with Mama Kits, so they have the basic supplies they need to care for their babies.

With needs rising across the famine-stricken region, pregnant women, mothers, and their newborns still urgently need your support.
