As you’re most likely aware, 2024 has been a very challenging year for the news business. Newsrooms have been decimated, and paywalls exclude a large portion of the public, while misinformation is plentiful and free.
But the Center for Investigative Reporting has bucked all those bleak trends. We do not have billionaires or oligarchs dictating our editorial strategy. We are a nonprofit, independent newsroom, and our only investors are listeners, readers, and viewers like you who stick up for us and support our work. And in these challenging times, we intend to use the full measure of the independence that gives us.
We will be a check on those who abuse power, who weaponize disinformation and lies, and whose intention is to divide us and not unite us. An independent press is a pillar of our democracy, and it has been assaulted. We are a guardrail that must be strengthened. We will bear witness to tell the story of those who are not able to tell their own stories and to make sure we can't say we stood by and felt helpless. We are not helpless and without hope.
