As 2024 draws to a close, we’re proud to reflect on a year of impactful investigations, global recognition, and meaningful progress in the fight against organized crime and corruption. Together with our network of courageous journalists and supporters, we’ve exposed abuses and sparked change worldwide.
This year, our investigations tackled critical issues:
-
The Steward Files revealed how private equity, real estate investors, and top executives pushed one of the U.S.’s largest hospital operators toward bankruptcy while failing to meet patients’ basic needs.
-
Dubai Unlocked exposed the city’s property market as a haven for illicit wealth.
-
The Crime Messenger uncovered how encrypted Sky ECC phones enabled organized crime globally.
-
Ahead of COP29, our “Know Your Host” page shed light on Azerbaijan’s corrupt ruling family.
The impact was clear:
-
Our reporting helped lead to 17 government investigations, 89 arrests and law enforcement actions, and $800 million in financial seizures.
-
Officials acted in Malta, Brazil, and Papua New Guinea.
-
Brazilian police arrested suspects in Amazon timber smuggling following our deforestation investigation.
We also reached key milestones, expanding our global network by welcoming 15 new media outlets, bringing the total to 71 member centers across five continents. Our work earned prestigious recognition, including the DIG Award, the IJ4EU Impact Award, and multiple EPPY Awards.
Despite these successes, OCCRP has also experienced an unprecedented number of threats this year, including SLAPP lawsuits, DDoS attacks, and harassment and smear campaigns against our journalists. Our end of the year appeal for support focuses on building up our security fund to face these and other hazards.
