Dear friends,
As the clock ticks down to the end of 2024, we stand at a crossroads.
This year, journalism faced relentless attacks. Brave reporters around the globe risked everything to shed light on corruption, war, and injustice. Some paid with their freedom, others with their lives. This year, as I am writing to you, 550 journalists are in prison, 95 are missing, 55 are held hostage and 54 have been killed. But their work reminds us of this: without journalism, there is no democracy.
As we prepare to face 2025, the challenges will only grow. Authoritarian regimes and enemies of press freedom are tightening their grip. Journalists are increasingly targeted with surveillance, imprisonment, or worse. Yet, the need for independent and reliable information has never been greater.
At Reporters Without Borders, we refuse to give up. We’ve defended journalists in courtrooms, rescued them from danger, and fought to ensure their voices are not silenced. But we can’t continue this vital work without your help.
