Dear John,

Throughout December, we’ve shared the story of Raha, a girl who was forced into child marriage. An early pregnancy put her health at risk, and as a young mother, she was denied the opportunity to work outside the home and become financially self-sufficient. Years later, now a woman, Raha, is divorced.

Initiating the divorce was a difficult decision. Sex-discriminatory laws could be used to deny her marital property, financial rights, and custody of her child, and local laws could make it more difficult for her to obtain a divorce than her male counterpart. Even if she was successful, she would still likely face social stigma.

In the words of Fatima, a real woman who pursued divorce in Algeria, “It’s still a social taboo and a disgrace to be a divorced woman in our society. I am considered as someone who was not capable of preserving her family. I had to fight to prove that I could find another job and raise my children independently.” She went on to say, “I would like to remarry, but if I do, I would lose custody of my children.”

By reforming sex and gender discriminatory laws, Equality Now helps ensure that women like Raha and Fatima can lead the lives they want and deserve. Please help fund our efforts with a gift today. ([link removed])

To achieve equality in family laws, Equality Now:
* Highlights harmful laws and provides evidence-based recommendations for reform, for example through our report on gender inequality in family laws in Africa.
* Convenes and facilitates collaboration through coalitions like the Hurra Coalition in the Middle East and North Africa, which is working to reform family laws and address child marriage in the region, and the Global Campaign for Equality in Family Law, which advocates for legal equality in the family worldwide.
* Works with partners to develop expert briefings and recommendations, including “The Distribution of Marital Property After the End of a Marriage Under International and Islamic Law” by Nasser El-Rayes, a book that compares laws in Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, and Palestine, and examines the distribution of joint property between spouses after a marriage ends.

We cannot achieve gender equality in society while inequality still exists in the family. We need your help to expand this important work in 2025. Through the end of the year, our generous partner InMaat Foundation will match gifts up to a total of $50,000. ([link removed])

Raha’s story reminds us that, while we’ve had successes in advancing women’s and girls’ equality this past year, there’s still more to do. Please don’t wait to donate when you can make a difference today. Thank you for supporting Equality Now and women and girls everywhere.
In solidarity,
S. Mona Sinha
Global Executive Director

P.S. Support our efforts to change the equation for women like Raha and Fatima with a tax-deductible gift today. Through the end of the year, InMaat Foundation will match gifts up to a total of $50,000. Don’t miss this opportunity to double your impact. ([link removed])
