We've got charts and graphs to back this up John.

Welcome to our annual charts and graphs email. We started this little tradition at the end of 2017, the end of the first year of Trump's first term in office. The idea, then and now, is two-fold:
- To give an honest and candid assessment of where we're at with US and international climate action, where we need to go, and how we might get there.
- To visually tell the story of why we need radical, digitally supported, non-violent direct action to save the climate and our common home in the hopes that it will inspire a few of you to make a year end gift.
There's a nice, long post in the blog with bigger versions of the charts, footnotes and citations, and more explanation. You should go read it, though I'll admit that it - like our current moment - is a bit dark this year.
If you want a quick version for your busy inbox, here's a recap.
|
For the first time since the Pandemic, US emissions are going down. But they're not going down enough, or fast enough, to meet our promises under the Paris climate agreement.
|
Some of our progress reducing climate pollution will stick, no matter what Trump does. There are coal plants that will not come back, and renewable energy investments that can't be undone. But Trump will certainly try and roll back or repeal any progress we've made. And, of course, we weren't making enough progress to start with.?
|
The biggest problem, as always, if fossil fuels - especially fossil gas. Even though Renewables are growing, fossil gas is growing faster. There have been a couple encouraging signs in the last few weeks, but it's clear that we're going to need more and more-radical non violent direct action to shut down fossil fuels in the coming year(s) ahead.
|
No matter what we do, or what Trump does, the "well below 2C" goal of the Paris climate agreement is now impossible to reach. We're well in the range of 2-3C now, and it could get much much worse.
In fact, it will get much worse over the next few years as more and more climate disasters batter communities and kill people around the world. Wars for and fueled by fossil fuels will also continue to proliferate, from the Middle East to Europe and beyond.
?
At the end of 2024, I'm not asking you to stay calm, rise up, or commit to positive action in the new year. I'm asking you to panic now.
I know this isn't the future most of us want, struggled for, nor why we signed up and took action last year. But this is where we're at, in charts and graphs, at the end of 2024. Again, click here to see all the charts and get the footnotes and citations, in our blog. But here's the upshot:
The old world is ending, climate and all. You can donate here to help us build the new one, together, through radical action and radical care. And we hope to see you in the new year for new actions and opportunities to make good trouble.
Thanks,
Drew and the crew at 198 methods
