Hi John, 

Care has truly been at the center of nearly all of my relationships and deeply rooted in my life. I’ve been a caregiver and/or in the presence of care my entire life. My mother and my aunt both passed from cancer before I was 21. In addition, two of my siblings also died after a long illness. Now, I am a caregiver for my only child, who was diagnosed with a developmental disability.

When I discovered the Care Fellowship earlier this year, I applied immediately. Through the program, I found an incredible group of people that I could relate to, vent with, and find comradery with. We are not alone, we are strong, and we can accomplish so much together. The care movement needs us now more than ever before - and we need each other, too.

Growing up, I did not have the words nor the support system to understand the many challenges but also the incredible gifts that come with being a caregiver. 

Over the last few months as a 2024 Care Fellow, I’ve learned so much as part of a community that understands what being a caregiver feels like. Having a safe place to be my authentic self as a caregiver has made the journey so much easier and so much lighter. 

This program has meant so much to me, and it’s helped over 300 other alumni, too. This Fellowship will go on to support so many more caregivers and care recipients to become champions for care – whether they’re organizers, creatives, policy wonks, or movement leaders. We need that now more than ever.
