GOP governor argues Elon Musk is too rich to have conflicts of interest
Folks, there is a realm where elected officeholders believe truly insane things and also choose to share them publicly — such as Elon Musk is so rich he is immune to conflicts of interest. Unfortunately, that world is here in our own backyard. New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu sat down for an interview on CNN and literally said out loud for other people to hear, "The guy’s worth 450 billion as of today... He doesn't need the dollars. He really doesn't. So it’s not about, if I get involved in this, I'll get another little contract here or there... So I like the fact that [Elon] in a way, he’s so rich, he’s so removed from the potential financial influence of it." Not sure which part of this is more jaw-dropping — the fact that Sununu thinks it's cool that Elon's unlimited resources have bought him a seat at the most important table, sees no potential for conflicts of interest in having the world's richest man regulate the agencies that regulate the world's richest man's massive federal contracts, that he honestly believes Musk cannot be gamed by anyone with ulterior motives because of his obscene wealth, or the admission-by-omission that basically everyone else in American politics who doesn't have hundreds of billions of dollars — including Sununu himself — is clearly compromised and apparently for sale. For f*ck's sake, why don't we just dissolve Congress, fit Elon for a crown, and get him a really cool scepter already?

350.org fights back against Big Oil's new destructive pipeline project
350.org: You probably won’t have heard about it, but there’s a disaster unfolding in East Africa. Will you chip in to help support 350.org's to stop this humanitarian and ecological disaster?
"Elon Musk is a national security risk": Retired Army general sounds alarm in scathing New York Times op-ed
Retired Lt. General Russel L. Honoré minced precisely no words, sounding a very loud alarm on Elon Musk's potential security risk in his newfound role as close adviser to Donald Trump, which only cost him $250 million to procure. Honoré explained in significant detail why he believes the leader of DOGE (the Department of Government Efficiency) — and holder of multiple federal contracts with the United States industrial space and military complex — may very well be beholden to China over massive loans he received from the foreign government in years past. And it's not just Honoré, mind you. The retired general cited none other than DOGE co-pilot Vivek Ramaswamy, who as recently as last year publicly stated, "I have no reason to think Elon won't jump like a circus monkey when Xi Jinping calls in the hour of need." In a separate Twitter post targeting Mr. Musk, Ramaswamy wrote, "the US needs leaders who aren't in China’s pocket." Honoré continued, "The fact that Mr. Musk spent a quarter of a billion dollars to help re-elect Mr. Trump does not give the incoming White House the license to look the other way at the national security risks he may pose... If Mr. Trump and his appointees mean what they say about getting tough on America’s adversaries, then they will act on this matter without delay. There is too much at stake to ignore what’s right in front of them."

Former Trump adviser tells Fox News: If Denmark won't "defend" Greenland from Russia, US could buy it and merge it with Alaska
Former Trump administration National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien laid out a truly bonkers scenario in which President-elect Donald Trump could somehow force Denmark to sell Greenland to the United States so it can become part of Alaska. "The Arctic is going to be a pathway that maybe — maybe even cuts down on the usage of the Panama Canal. And the Russians and Chinese are all over the Arctic. Now, the Danes gathered, the Kingdom of Denmark owns Greenland, and they've got an obligation to defend Greenland. And so President Trump said, if you don't defend Greenland, we'll buy it and we'll defend it, but we're not going to defend it for free and like, you know, and not develop Greenland and not extract the minerals and oil and resources of Greenland." Ah, yes. Extract the minerals and oil and resources. There it is.

Jimmy Carter, who rose from humble peanut farmer to president, dies aged 100
James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr, a naval officer, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and peanut farm operator who became governor of Georgia and later the 39th president of the United States, has died. Carter, who was the longest-living former US president, passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday, 29 December, his son announced. An immediate cause was not given. He served as president for one term from 1977 to 1981, brokering the historic Camp David Accords in 1978 that established peace between Egypt and Israel, but is just as well-known for his humanitarian service after leaving Washington, DC, working for Habitat for Humanity, and negotiating peace deals. Carter continued his extraordinary volunteer work for decades after leaving office until he entered hospice care in February 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023.
Kari Lake blames "corrupt machine" for decision to end quest for elected office
Conspiracy theorist, former local TV talker, and die-hard Trumper Kari Lake will reportedly not seek office again, following two failed campaigns in the state of Arizona, if you're one who puts much stock into anything the perennial loser says these days. Lake, who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2022 and a US Senate seat in 2024, addressed her decision in a Saturday evening post on nüTwitter, where she blamed a “corrupt machine” apparently "hellbent" on keeping her out of elected office. Lake conveniently shifted blame away from her own dismal campaign track record, enthusiastic embrace of the Donald's Big Lie, penchant for peddling dangerous COVID-19 misinformation, and unconscionable support for an arcane state abortion law written before the Civil War and instead claimed some nefarious "machine" was secretly working against her political ambitions. Pretty sure it was simply a matter of Arizona voters not being interested in her bullshit, but you do you, Kari!

Earthjustice is ready for the fights ahead
Earthjustice: There is no organization quite like Earthjustice. As a nonprofit environmental law organization, Earthjustice forces government agencies to protect species like manatees and wolves. They go to court to stop oil drilling in the Arctic. They partner with frontline communities to reduce toxic, cancer-causing pollution. Earthjustice even lobbies Congress to pass critical climate legislation. The law is the most powerful tool we have to secure a healthy and sustainable future for all. And polluting industries and the politicians in their pockets know it — that’s why they’re scheming to dodge and even dismantle the nation’s bedrock environmental laws. While corporations use their high-paid lawyers to roll back regulations and poison our air, Earthjustice is on the front lines fighting to make sure they don't get their way. Our clean air, clean water, and sustainable future hinge on Earthjustice's legal team winning big fights behind the scenes — but they don't have the war chest of billionaires to do it with. That’s why a group of Earthjustice supporters has come together to create the Rapid Response Legal Fund, which will be MATCHING your donation $2:$1, tripling your impact from December 26-31! Will you chip in to Earthjustice and help them in their mission?
