An It Gets Better school grant changed my life! - Joyathon, Episode Five

Hi John,

My name is David, and I’m a senior in high school in South Florida. This year, I applied with my teacher and received an It Gets Better grant to make things better for queer students in my school.

This is episode five of the Joyathon, and I want to talk about how I feel most joyful when I’m embraced by others who see me for me — and how I can turn that around to be of service to others.

Applying for 50 States. 50 Grants. wasn’t easy, but it was worth every moment. My teacher and I worked closely to outline our vision for a project that could create a lasting impact. When we found out we were selected, I was overjoyed. This grant allows us to produce a video series tackling issues like body image, sexual health, and LGBTQ+ rights, and share it with GSAs across the state. Knowing that our work will resonate with queer youth long after I graduate fills me with satisfaction and pride.

This project has also taught me the importance of loving myself so I can help others. For me, joy starts with self-care — taking walks, connecting with my queer identity, or just spending time with loved ones who embrace me for who I am. I believe queerness is healing when you let it be. By practicing self-love, I’ve been able to show up for others, and this project is a reflection of that.

John, let's make sure queer youth know that taking care of themselves is every bit as important as taking care of their community. Make a donation to It Gets Better today! [[link removed]]

As I’ve grown through this experience, I’ve realized that joy is infectious when you’re willing to share it with others. Being seen and supported has made all the difference for me. Surrounding myself in queer culture has been healing, and now, I can pass that joy on to others along through this project. I know that somewhere, another queer student will feel understood, represented, and uplifted because of what we’ve created. That thought gives me tremendous joy — and I hope it brings you joy too, knowing your support is what makes projects like this possible. [[link removed]]

Let’s keep spreading joy. Together, we can make sure every queer student knows they’re seen, heard, and loved.

With gratitude,

David, 18
