In Ukraine, the ongoing war has marginalized LGBTIQ people even further than before the Russian full-scale invasion. Discrimination has surged, leaving queer people with little or no access to mainstream humanitarian assistance, including access to essential resources like shelter, healthcare, and food. In this crisis, our fight for our dignity and safety is more urgent than ever.
But hope endures. With pressure from Outright and our partners in the region, the United Nations has established a groundbreaking working group to safeguard the rights and well-being of LGBTIQ communities in Ukraine. With Outright and our partners, this group is tackling urgent needs by:
- Providing safe living spaces
- Expanding access to healthcare, including mental health services
- Ensuring legal protections
- Offering skills training to improve employment opportunities
This work shows what’s possible when we act with resilience and purpose. But the world we imagine — a world where no one is left behind — won’t come to life without all of us committing to this vision.
