Lame Duck Wrap Up

On the afternoon of Thursday, December 12, Michigan House Republicans walked out of session in protest of the refusal of Democrats to address a phase out of the tipped wage credit and earned sick leave, issues that threaten restaurant workers and the small businesses that employ them beginning next year. Several hours later, Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit) also walked out of session in protest of an abuse of the legislative process during the Lame Duck session and what she alleges are broken promises by Democratic House Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit).

Whitsett and the Republicans were joined the following week by Sen. Sylvania Santana (D-Detroit) who also publicly criticized Attorney General Dana Nessel and Governor Gretchen Whitmer. As a result of the lack of a quorum and increased infighting among Democrats, the list of gun control legislation passed in Lame Duck is far less harmful than it could have been. The most dangerous bills are dead.

Thanks to all of you who contacted your legislators on firearms legislation since Election Day. Thanks to the Republican legislators who stood firm against gun control bills. And thanks to the courage and fortitude of Rep. Karen Whitsett who denied Democrats their necessary 56th vote.

A special thank you to Republican Speaker-elect Matt Hall who masterfully outmaneuvered Democratic Speaker Joe Tate. Tate's gamble -to not hold session between June and November in order to protect Democrats at the polls and then push through a heavy partisan agenda after the election- failed spectacularly and should serve as a lesson for future legislative leaders.
