For 66 miles, there are no roads—only treacherous forests, cliffs, rivers, and muddy swamps. People also face extreme violence, extortion, disease, and sexual violence when they cross the Darién Gap, a stretch of dense jungle between Colombia and Panama. Despite the risks, thousands of people attempt this crossing every day on their long journey north to seek a better life.

This year, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was forced to suspend activities in Panama for seven months before restarting our work in October. Once our teams resumed working, every second counted. In just 10 days, our teams carried out 280 medical consultations, including treating 72 patients with symptoms of mental distress. MSF teams have treated patients for diabetes, hypertension, and epilepsy, while also providing consultations to pregnant women and treating victims of sexual violence.

Five-year-old Hassan’s feet were severely burned by boiling water at his home in Gaza. Since the war escalated in October 2023, power cuts and shortages have forced many Gazans to use dangerous methods to light their homes and cook their meals.

Hassan is being cared for by the physiotherapy department of MSF’s Reconstructive Surgery Program in Amman, Jordan. It’s a critical hub for MSF’s patients from Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Palestine, who aren’t able to access care at home.

“We sold avocados, potatoes, taro fruit,” says Tuliya, recalling life before the war that forced her to flee North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). “Everything we needed was in our fields.”

Like hundreds of thousands of other people, Tuliya is now living in a refugee camp in Goma, DRC, where MSF is working to provide displaced people with critical care. Our teams have repeatedly witnessed crossfire and rocket explosions inside the camps. Still, MSF teams are working to provide clean drinking water, build latrines and showers, and respond to cholera and measles outbreaks.
