When I was 11 years old, I was removed from an abusive home and placed in the Iowa foster care system. That’s when I met Kimberly, who was working as a court-appointed attorney for kids like me.
There are so many things about Kimberly I’m grateful for, it’s hard to list them all. A few things that stand out are her compassion, her willingness to really listen, and her thoughtfulness in going above and beyond what her job required to make me feel less alone.
Kimberly believed me. She listened with empathy and understanding.
Kimberly was the one constant in my life as I moved from one foster home to another. She went to bat for me. She advocated for me when I could not advocate for myself.
Life as an attorney can be hectic and extremely busy, but that didn’t stop her from going the extra mile. She would visit and stay awhile just to check in. Sometimes she’d bring ice cream. I know none of that was what she was being paid for, but she did it anyway, because she cares.
More than a decade after Kimberly and I first met, she still calls to check on me and to see how my life is going. I’m now a mom and I invited Kimberly to my baby shower, I consider her a mentor and friend, and I know her drive and heart are what will make her an incredible U.S. Senator for Iowans and all Americans.
I’m so happy Kimberly is running to be our next U.S. Senator! I can’t think of a better person for the job. Her determination and commitment to what matters has been steady and strong for as long as I’ve known her.
John, we need people like Kimberly in Washington. People who will fight for kids like me, who will fight for Medicare for All and livable wages -- things that make families stronger and allow them to thrive. We need someone who will help all Americans feel less alone.
Please join me in supporting Kimberly today. Let’s show her we’re here for her, just like she is for us.
