Colorado man accused of attacking TV reporter, saying "This is Trump’s America now"
Patrick Thomas Egan, 39, was arrested in Grand Junction, Colorado, after police say he followed KKCO/KJCT reporter Ja’Ronn Alex’s vehicle for 40 miles. Alex told police that he believed he had been followed and attacked because he is Pacific Islander. After arriving in Grand Junction, Egan, who was driving a taxi, pulled up next to Alex at a stoplight and said “Are you even a U.S. citizen? This is Trump’s America now! I’m a Marine and I took an oath to protect this country from people like you!” Egan then followed him back to his news station and tried to strangle him. This, uh, really does not bode well for the next four years.

UNFPA leads the charge to protect women's dignity around the world
United Nations Population Fund: When the worst comes to pass and women are plunged into conflict, access to simple things like tampons can be suddenly cut off at a moment's notice. That's why UNFPA is working overtime to deliver life-saving "dignity kits" to women in conflict zones like Ukraine, Sudan, and Gaza, so that even in the darkest of times, women and girls are able to manage their periods with dignity. Make a donation to UNFPA and help deliver out-of-reach and forgotten-about supplies like menstrual pads, clean underwear, and soap to the women who need it the most!

Israeli troops forcibly remove staff and patients from northern Gaza hospital, destroy surgical unit
Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya was arrested by Israel after he refused to leave his hospital, which was then attacked by the Israeli military. "Initial reports indicate that some key departments were severely burnt and destroyed during the raid. 60 health workers and 25 patients in critical condition, including those on ventilators, reportedly remain in the hospital. The patients in moderate to severe condition were forced to evacuate to the destroyed and non-functional Indonesian Hospital," said the World Health Organization in a statement. Video shows that IDF forces stripped the medical patients down and sent those capable of walking out in the cold to walk to the destroyed, non-functional Indonesian Hospital at gunpoint. The Israeli military, fueled by American weapons and public dollars, has been deliberately and systematically dismantling the Gazan health system. They've bombed 110 hospitals and medical centers and provided 0 evidence that Hamas was operating out of any of them.

President Trump will not be as powerful as he seems
Corey Robin, Jacobin: "One thing I did get completely right about Trump’s first term, before it even began, was that he would be a spectacularly weak president; failure, rather than success, would be his lot. The reason for that failure and that weakness, I argued again and again, had little to do with Trump’s personal fecklessness or incorrigible incompetence, considerable as they were and are. It had much more to do with the dysfunction internal to the Republican Party and the conservative movement. I’ve not been convinced that Trump 2.0 would necessarily be all that different from Trump 1.0. Nothing having to do with Trump personally; I’ve always thought the focus on his personal flaws and hapless leadership has distracted us from the deeper rot within the Republican Party and the conservative movement. Well, with the last week’s events, the media has finally realized the truth: the dysfunction continues. The problem, for Trump, remains what it has always been: not the so-called moderates in his party but the hard right. These hardcore right-wingers who tanked Trump’s plans for raising the debt limit are not just ideological purists and fanatics; the GOP has had those forever. The problem is that they’ve got independent sources of funding and huge levels of support in their districts. That doesn’t make for power or coherence in the party, but just the opposite. Just as we saw powerlessness and incoherence in Trump’s first term, we’re seeing it now, even before his second term has begun."

U.S. homelessness spiked by jaw-dropping amount in 2024
Malcolm Ferguson, The New Republic: "Homelessness in the United States is soaring, increasing 18.1 percent in 2024 after a 12 percent increase the year prior. Natural disasters, inadequate options for migrants, and a devastating lack of affordable housing are the primary catalysts. There are now 770,000 homeless individuals in the United States, according to data collected by the Department of Housing and Urban Development in January of this year. This number does not include those who are transient—like those couch surfing and staying with friends or family. This is a damning development for a country that boasts to be the greatest on earth. And it comes as communities large and small, liberal and conservative, grow more and more hostile towards their homeless neighbors, many of whom are already battling with mental illness. The Supreme Court ruling that allowed cities to ban sleeping outside has empowered classic liberal strongholds like San Francisco and Portland to start clearing homeless encampments, as they simply move the problem somewhere else rather than solve it. 'Increased homelessness is the tragic, yet predictable, consequence of underinvesting in the resources and protections that help people find and maintain safe, affordable housing,' said Renee Willis, incoming interim CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition. 'As advocates, researchers, and people with lived experience have warned, the number of people experiencing homelessness continues to increase as more people struggle to afford sky-high housing costs.'"
