Dear Reader,
On behalf of our entire team, thank you for reading The Hechinger Report. I’m Olivia Sanchez, and I write the Higher Education newsletter.
Each of us at Hechinger has a personal reason for why this work matters so deeply. Today, I’d like to share mine with you.
Education has always been important to my family's story. As first-generation college students, my parents overcame significant adversity to earn their degrees, and our lives have changed because of it.
When I was growing up, my mom encouraged me to work hard in school by telling me to make the choice that would give me the most options in the future. This advice annoyed me as a teenager when I would have preferred to blow off my pre-calculus homework and not worry about my future. But as is so often the case, my mom was right. Her advice has evolved into a question that guides my work:
Am I producing journalism that helps students, families and educators make informed choices that will lead to success later in life?
I think about the thorny questions that come up in my reporting, and try to make sure I can answer them clearly through my stories. And I consider the authority figures and systems that have power over our lives, and try to make sure I’m holding them accountable.
If one of our newsletters this year (we’ve sent 225 so far!) has delivered critical, data-driven insights you might not have found elsewhere, I hope you’ll consider supporting our nonprofit newsroom with a gift that’s meaningful to you.
