Update: Famine was confirmed in Zamzam camp in Sudan’s North Darfur state four months ago, and today areas in North Darfur and the Western Nuba mountains have been identified as experiencing famine conditions. More than 24.6 million people are facing a crisis level of hunger. It’s been more than a year and a half since violence between armed groups erupted in the country. So far up to 150,000 people have been killed, while more than 12 million people — nearly a quarter of the population — have been displaced. Our team and partners are preparing resources to support civilians across Sudan who are facing compounding challenges of displacement and hunger. As we also call for a global humanitarian response to the urgent needs of the Sudanese people, please make a gift right now to support Mercy Corps’ emergency efforts in Sudan.
A crowd of people wait to receive food cards earlier this year after registering as new arrivals at the Agiri internal displacement camp in the Nuba Mountains in southern Sudan.
Throughout this crisis, Mercy Corps teams have been providing cash assistance to help families obtain food, water, medicine, and hygiene supplies. Now, as famine conditions spread and violence escalates, we must all do our part to support the millions of innocent people caught in the middle of crisis. Please rush a gift right now to support families in Sudan and other countries around the world facing conflict and hunger crisis. — The Mercy Corps team |
