I wouldn’t be sending you emails if our work were not so urgent or the cause so important to both you and me.
It takes resources — big resources — to make the kind of change that you and I want to see for domesticated and wild animals.
* Our legal team , fighting in the courts to stop the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s radical plan to kill half a million barred owls. Or to maintain federal protections for wolves under the Endangered Species Act. Or to defend state farm-animal welfare laws from Big Pork’s legal maneuvers to undermine them.

* Our public policy teams , fighting on Capitol Hill and in state capitols for new legal protections for animals. We would not have the FDA Modernization 2.0 to reduce animal testing, the national ban on animal fighting, or the ban on the sale of shark fins without their labors.

* Our communications people , calling out cruelty and exposing wicked practices to public scrutiny. I’ve always said “cruelty cannot stand the spotlight” and that our work is a disinfectant to people, businesses and governments that put self-interest ahead of the public interest.

* Our science team , producing airtight arguments, grounded on a close understanding of science. Our report on cockfighting and the spread of avian diseases is game-changing. And so are our reports on apex predators controlling Chronic Wasting Disease in elk and deer, and on mink farms and the spread of zoonotic diseases threatening animal health and human health.
It’s a longer list than most would expect — even as we maximize donations by forsaking office space and asking our employees to shoulder their own technology so that every dollar can be spent only where necessary. Our treasurer, who was a senior banking executive, handles the vast majority of accounting and financial management, and she’s a 100-percent volunteer who works 70 hours a week.
