Team, the fair maps movement is headed back to court in 2025. I hope you’ll take a moment to read more about these cases and then make a $15 donation to All On The Line to power our work to create a stronger, fairer democracy. → [link removed]
In 2021, our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), filed the first legal challenge against the state of Alabama’s gerrymandered map, which ultimately made its way before the U.S. Supreme Court.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Allen v. Milligan led the courts to force the State of Alabama to enact a new congressional map, which created a second Black opportunity district for voters there.
In February, there will be a federal trial to protect this fair map.
While Black Alabamians prepare to go to trial, a group of tenacious Louisiana voters are headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In 2022, the NRF initiated a successful challenge against the state’s gerrymandered congressional map in a case known as Robinson v. Ardoin . Once Milligan was decided, Louisiana finally enacted a VRA-compliant map. But immediately after, a lawsuit was filed against the map.
One of the most ideologically-driven, conservative federal courts in the country struck down Louisiana’s new, more representative map in Callais v. Landry — ignoring Supreme Court precedent that had upheld and enforced Section 2 of the VRA less than a year before in Allen v. Milligan .
That case, now called Louisiana v. Callais, is now on appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court, and oral arguments will likely be held in early 2025. The NRF submitted an amicus brief to SCOTUS this month, asking the Court to protect Louisiana’s Voting Rights Act-compliant map.
These cases will be critical to our fight ahead — and while that diligent work is happening in the courts, our movement won’t stop working with the people to restore fairness to our democracy. Can we count on you to support the All On The Line campaign by making a contribution today?
