Dear John,
Donald Trump has nominated a cabinet of conspiracy theorists, extremists, and suck-ups who are so utterly unqualified that even some Senate Republicans are pushing back.
So now Trump is threatening to strong-arm the U.S. Senate by forcing Congress to adjourn, allowing him to fill his cabinet with recess appointments.
No public hearings. No confirmation votes. No way to stop Trump from filling his administration with anyone he desires, including the most corrupt and unqualified people he can find.
This breathtaking power grab would completely upend the balance of power constructed by the founders.
Inequality Media is launching an urgent public education effort to alert the American people about this threat and urge Senate Majority Leader John Thune not to abdicate his constitutional responsibility.
Will you make a monthly donation to help alert the public and stop Donald Trump’s scheme to ram through his cabinet of crackpots using recess appointments?
Temporary recess appointments are allowed only when vacancies occur
during Senate recesses — because in the 1780s, it could take days or
weeks for senators and new cabinet nominees to travel to Washington.
But Trump is threatening to hijack the recess appointments provision to pack his cabinet with totally unqualified stooges who could otherwise never get confirmed.
Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense, former Fox News personality Pete Hegseth, is in trouble due to reports of chronic drinking on the job, sexual assault, and a shocking lack of relevant experience.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s choice to run the Department of Health and Human Services, is an anti-vaccine quack.
Kash Patel, his choice for FBI Director, is a QAnon conspiracy theorist who has openly said he would use the office to go after Trump’s political enemies. Former Trump administration Attorney General Bill Barr said Patel has “virtually no experience that would qualify him to serve at the highest level of the world’s preeminent law enforcement agency.”
The list goes on and on and on, but under the U.S. Constitution, it’s the Senate’s role to confirm — or reject — President Trump’s nominees.
We’re sounding the alarm with public education videos and explainer posts, and collecting petition signatures to urge incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune to stand firm and block Trump’s recess appointment scheme.
Will you make a monthly donation to help educate the public and stop Donald Trump’s latest assault on democracy?
Thank you,
Robert Reich
