Dear John,
Dana, a 56-year-old Wisconsin resident, was temporarily living at the Milwaukee Salvation Army Emergency Lodge. She wanted to apply for permanent housing, Social Security, and disability benefits, but she needed an ID to do that. With no income, she couldn’t afford the fee for a new ID at the DMV.
Luckily, VoteRiders is a partner and frequent visitor to the Milwaukee Salvation Army Emergency Lodge, where our team offers regular voter ID help to its residents.
When Dana saw that VoteRiders would be on-site to provide one-on-one assistance to voters in need, she knew she’d found the help she needed to get her ID.
Jake, VoteRiders’ Wisconsin State Coordinator, took Dana’s information, scheduled a DMV appointment for her, and arranged a free ride to take her to and from her local DMV office. To ensure everything went smoothly, Jake accompanied Dana to her DMV appointment and helped her fill out the required paperwork. Once the paperwork was signed and completed, Jake covered the cost of Dana’s updated ID.
Before Dana left, Jake made sure she was also registered to vote and that she’d be able to use her new ID to cast a ballot. A photo ID is required to vote in person in Wisconsin, and a copy of an accepted identification is required the first time you request an absentee ballot.
At VoteRiders, we believe money should never be a barrier to voting. That’s why VoteRiders always covers the costs associated with getting an ID for voters like Dana. We’re able to cover those costs thanks to the generosity of our donors.
We’re anticipating a wave of new and stricter voter ID laws in 2025. You can help! Become a donor today and make a real difference in the lives of voters like Dana .
