Dear John,

I’m writing to flag the results of a new survey about immigration policy just released by the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC).

The national survey—conducted by the firm Morning Consult for BPC—found that voters do not believe that the federal government should prioritize using immigration policies to address the economic fallout caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the representative sample of U.S. voters, only 8% said shutting off immigration to preserve American jobs should be the federal government’s highest priority; while 66% ranked such a move as among the lowest of the six priorities tested in the survey.

Furthermore, although a majority of surveyed voters did approve of President Donald Trump’s temporary suspension of overseas green card processing, they were evenly split on whether that policy would be effective in helping the economic recovery. This reflects Americans’ conflicting views about the role of immigration in today’s economy.

BPC’s Immigration team is using these survey results to guide our work of building a collaborative and more responsive framework for immigration policy in the United States. To learn more about the team’s recent work, you can subscribe to our weekly podcast, visit our COVID-19 blog series, or attend our next virtual event, Immigration at the State Level, on Thursday, May 28.

Regards,
