John,
As we say goodbye to 2024 and prepare to bring in a new year, we wanted to share some thoughts with you.
In the wake of the 2016 election, Sister District was born from a desire to fight not just Donald Trump but also the systems and ideas that enabled his rise. From the very beginning, we have focused on state legislatures because we understand the outsized importance on the issues we care about most — abortion, climate, the economy, and democracy itself.
Now, eight years later, as we continue to grapple with the devastating reality of another four years of Donald Trump, we must remember this: we are light years ahead of where we were in 2016. In 2016, Democrats had majorities in just 29 state legislative chambers. Today, Dems control nearly 40 state chambers.
Together, we spent eight years strengthening our grassroots infrastructure for the fight ahead. Every dollar, every call, every postcard, and every door knock has built a movement that will withstand the setbacks of this night and continue pushing forward. The fight for democracy doesn’t end here — state legislatures are more important than ever.
So, as we look toward 2025 and beyond, Sister District is laser-focused on investing in candidates, lawmakers, and organizers who are deeply rooted in their communities. We will continue to flip, hold, and make inroads in key states every year to put us in the best position for redistricting after the 2030 Census and to drive down-ballot turnout to win up and down the ticket.
In the new year, we’ll publish our 2024 Impact Report, detailing all of the incredible and inspiring victories we accomplished together in the states over the past year, so please stay tuned!
For now, we hope you are enjoying a restful and rejuvenating holiday season. Whether you’re a volunteer, donor, candidate, staff member, or thought partner, thank you for being part of this work.
Wishing you a wonderful start to the new year!
Onward,
- The Sister District Team
