WILD ABOUT HARRY
Harry Hopkins (1890-1946) was a close advisor to FDR. During the Great Depression, Hopkins headed the New Deal’s Works Progress Administration, which supplied paid jobs to millions of struggling Americans to build public infrastructure across the US—parks, schools, roads and electricity to regions without. When conservatives in Congress questioned federal support for artists, Hopkins replied, “Hell! They’ve got to eat just like other people.”
The WPA commissioned thousands of visual artists to decorate public buildings and hired thousands more to work in the federal theater, music and writing programs. The WPA brought more art to Americans than ever before or since. 2025 is the 90th anniversary of the WPA. The Living New Deal is sparking a national conversation about what a new New Deal could do for America today.
