Friends -
One $1,200 stimulus check is not nearly enough to help families who are struggling.
With the unemployment numbers skyrocketing, Americans need help urgently. That’s why I worked with Senators Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris to introduce the Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act.
This bill would provide a direct cash payment of $2,000 each month to individuals with an income below $100,000 until 3 months after the coronavirus pandemic ends, as well as an additional $2,000 for children. But we need your support to pass this bill and help families across the country.
The official unemployment rate was nearly 15 percent at the beginning of May, and many experts estimate that 1 in 5 Americans are now out of work. Our unemployment offices have never handled this level of need, leaving many still waiting for assistance.
People are falling ill and falling behind on their bills — and for the families of the thousands who have died of COVID-19, medical and funeral expenses are compounding their grief.
After the Great Depression, FDR started the New Deal to help the country rebound. My feeling is that this is a similar moment. Our policy must match the urgency and enormity of this moment.
This money will be the liferaft that will help families to make it through this crisis without being economically destroyed.
We have to help people who, through no fault of their own, are seeing all of the things that they care about, all the success that they’ve worked for, and all the financial security they’ve earned get away from them.
Thank you,
Ed Markey
