Friend,
Before April 15 of last year, I never imagined that I would find myself in Khartoum, the capital city of my home country, Sudan, working in a conflict zone.
I’ve worked with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for several years, but I’ve never seen anything like the suffering that people in my country are enduring daily. My family escaped Khartoum, among the millions of others displaced, with no clear path to survival and little attention from the world. Now, I’m on an assignment in Twic County, South Sudan, across the border from home. Although I'm physically far away, the effects of the war are ever-present, pulling me back with every news update.
From January to June 2024 alone, MSF teams in Twic County and the Abyei Special Administrative Area conducted 16,885 emergency consultations and performed 1,914 surgical operations. However, as the influx of patients continues, there is a significant shortage in hospital care, surgical capabilities, and operating room availability.
Every second counts for our patients, and MSF doctors and staff members cannot do this vital work without you. Before 2024 is over, will you make a generous matched gift to TRIPLE your impact and fuel our lifesaving work around the world?

Thousands of Sudanese refugees have also crossed into different parts of South Sudan, like Twic County, scattered in host communities or crowded into refugee camps.
I know this pain well. My family was displaced not once but several times in just 18 months. Even for those who escape the violence or reunite after separation, new challenges arise—floods, disease outbreaks—under a collapsed health care system. Most hospitals have been destroyed. Those that remain functional are marooned without medicine, staff, or resources. Despite all this, we remain committed to our patients, refusing to turn away from this humanitarian crisis.
Our donor community has allowed our staff to be there for people who would otherwise have nowhere else to turn. MSF relies on donations from individuals like you to respond to the overwhelming needs of people seeking care around the world.
Friend, make your first gift to MSF today, and it will be tripled by a group of donors >>
I’m here to share our resilience. As humanitarians—medics, logisticians, and nurses—we do everything we can to support those in need. This is exactly what I’ve been doing for the past months in Twic at Mayen Abun County Hospital. Every small act matters, every effort is vital, and every second counts.
Gratefully,
Dr. Mohamed Bashir
Project Medical Referent at Mayen Abun County Hospital, South Sudan
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières
P.S. If your gift and our email have crossed paths, we sincerely thank you for your generosity!

All gifts given, up to $1,000,000, will be TRIPLED through midnight on December 31—thanks to a leading group of donors. Gifts received after the match has been met will not be matched but will be used where needed most. |
