Americans are tired of war. That bodes well for the Quincy Institute’s mission of shifting US foreign policy away from militarism and toward a national security strategy centered on diplomacy and restraint. 

But our mission cannot be achieved in a vacuum. 

As the world moves away from unipolarity, America will benefit from international institutions, norms, and laws that help make the world more predictable and that raise the cost for states to destabilize regions. Many reforms are needed to adjust international institutions and norms to a world where America no longer seeks global domination.

To help prepare both the United States and the world for a less interventionist America, we launched the Better Order Project.

Over the past 18 months, this project brought together 130 former foreign ministers, defense ministers, UN ambassadors, and experts from more than 40 countries to produce proposals crucial to the stability of a multipolar world — from upgrading the UN Security Council, to governance of AI, to norms around the use of military force.

Through this work, we’ve engaged in critical dialogues with global leaders and established pathways for a more peacefully engaged America.

In 2025, we will embark on a national and global tour to promote these proposals and the positive vision for America’s role in the world that they represent.
