John, I’m thrilled to share that our grassroots climate movement in New York won TWO huge victories that will have far-reaching implications in the fight to protect our climate. This week, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York signed both the Climate Change Superfund Act and the CO2 Fracking Ban into law. Through the Climate Change Superfund Act, New York has now become the second state, after Vermont, to require Big Oil companies to pay for climate impacts. This law will require fossil fuel companies with the largest historical greenhouse gas emissions in New York to pay $3 billion annually toward climate resiliency efforts. The CO2 Fracking Ban blocks the latest attempts to open up the state to fracking. Even as we just celebrated 10 years since the historic ban was put in place – polluters were still trying to find a loophole to frack in the state. This bill re-asserts New York’s fracking ban yet again. Now tell Congress to pass the federal Climate Superfund Act! There is a growing movement to make polluters pay for climate pollution, and New York’s law creates even more momentum for our fight. When industries pollute, whether it’s toxic waste or climate-heating carbon, there’s a cost. That cost shouldn’t fall on taxpayers and communities to clean up their mess — the industries responsible for climate damage need to pay their fair share! Climate Change Superfund legislation has been introduced in multiple states to hold climate polluters accountable: California, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey. And in Congress, a federal Climate Superfund Act has been introduced in both the House and Senate. Building on New York’s law, it’s time for Congress to follow suit. Send a message to your members of Congress to pass the federal Climate Superfund Act to make climate polluters pay.
