John, you don’t usually hear directly from me, but I’m the person who’s responsible for making sure Common Cause has the resources we need to protect voters’ rights, win legislative & legal battles, and fight for a fairer democracy.
And unfortunately, if something doesn’t change in the next few days, we’re going to fall short of what we need.
It's no secret that since November, giving is down across our movement. And many prominent organizations have been forced to make tough choices and scale back their work when money doesn't come through.
And I don’t need to tell you, John: it’ll be a disaster if Common Cause must do the same.
Everything our experts tell me indicates that the incoming Trump administration will push the limits of our checks and balances. The same people who tried – but failed – to sabotage our right to a representative democracy will be walking the halls of the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives.
And as I write this, dark money groups are plotting to radically reshape our government from a democracy to an autocracy – rewriting our Constitution to permanently force far-right policies on the entire country.
But not all hope is lost: When Common Cause has the resources needed to fight back, we win.
Here’s an example: We recruited 15,000 Election Protection volunteers across the country to ensure EVERY voter could make their voice heard at the ballot box. And here’s another one: We helped bring fair maps to Wisconsin, ensuring that elections in the state will be fair and competitive and leading to a legislature that works on the people's concerns, not party ideology.
Those are just two examples of the work we need to continue in the coming months, but now we need to replenish our resources in preparation for what will be another decisive year for our future.
Remember: Thanks to a generous Common Cause member who donated $250,000, we’ve got a major head start on our $500,000 goal. BUT we have just 4 days to fill the gap, so if you’re willing to act and help us face 2025 with the focus and dedication it will demand, chip in $3 now >>
I know I can count on Common Cause members like you to step up when it counts – and I’m telling you the truth when I say right now is one of those moments.
Thanks for all you do,
Daryl Lobban, Senior Vice President of External Affairs
