** A NOTE FROM LISA DESJARDINS, CAPITOL HILL CORRESPONDENT
------------------------------------------------------------
A few weeks ago, just days after the election, I sat on a panel of fellow campaign and Washington journalists.
The audience, many also in journalism, raised clouds of concern.
One asked, essentially, how do we continue when it is not clear that our work is overcoming misinformation? And when Americans do not know who or what to trust?
Someone responded honestly and understandably, that they too had concern.
I thought about it and gave my answer.
These are not easy times to cover. Our country remains sharply divided. The world faces multiple crises. And more than ever, many on the passionate sides of the divide are attacking journalism itself. I know journalists who are thinking of leaving the profession.
But, I said, if things get harder, that just means that it is more important that we keep shining a light on the truth and reality of what is happening. I have a theory that Americans far in the future will look back on this time and wish they had the opportunity we did — to question the players involved now and to unravel the thinking of the country at this pivotal time.
I pointed to a core philosophy here at News Hour - that we simply have to keep adding to the important conversations the entire country needs to have. And above all, we need to lean on each other as we face moments that test us and could exhaust us.
The room applauded.
But what the audience didn’t know is that I could not have said this, spoken to the strength I see in journalism without the support that I and our newsroom get.
It is hard to convey what it means to me personally that you -- a group of phenomenal individuals — are rooting for and working for our success. As I spent long hours in the halls of Congress last week, tracking down the turbulence that nearly led to a government shutdown, I was fueled by thinking of our community. Of the News Hour family.
We have a unique and special mission. It is why we remain so trusted in a time of mistrust.
And this community is why I am undaunted by what has been an extraordinary and often exhausting year for us all.
Soon we will have both a new presidency and a returning president. I am thankful to be able to report on what’s ahead. People will be watching closely. It is an opportunity to do what we do best: simply cover the news and bring light.
So this holiday season, I want to say thank you to you for helping us keep that light going, and personally for giving me the support that truly does matter on tough days.
Happy holidays,
Lisa
