Email from National Constitution Center Make a special year-end gift today Dear John, It’s been an eventful and inspiring year of programs at the NCC. As 2024 comes to an end, I’d like to highlight some of the events we shared as a community. It’s been especially meaningful to discuss so many great books about American history and the Constitution on our We the People podcast and through our America’s Town Hall series. What follows is a list of some of my favorite book conversations, in the hope of inspiring you to enjoy some deep reading over the holidays. At the same time, it would be wonderful if you would consider making an end-of-year gift to ensure lots more light and learning in 2025! Here are some fantastic book discussions featured during our America’s Town Hall programs: Reading the Constitution: A Book Talk With Justice Stephen Breyer and A Conversation With Justice Neil Gorsuch on ‘The Human Toll of Too Much Law’: Our honorary co-chairs joined us for separate Town Halls to share their latest books. How Religious Were the Founders?: Three great scholars discuss the history of religious liberty in America, including Jane Calvert, author of Penman of the Founding: A Biography of John Dickinson. The Highest Calling: A Conversation with David Rubenstein on the American Presidency: Check out my conversation with David about his collection of conversations with American historians. Native Americans and the Supreme Court: A memorable conversation with scholars including Keith Richotte Jr., author of the forthcoming book, The Worst Trickster Story Ever Told: Native America, the Supreme Court, and the U.S. Constitution. And here are a few terrific book talks from our We the People podcasts: Judge David Tatel on Vision: A Memoir of Blindness and Justice: The noted judge and civil rights lawyer reflects on his amazing new memoir—one of the most popular episodes of the year. Can the Constitution Serve as a Document of National Unity?: Yuval Levin discusses his important new book American Covenant: How the Constitution Unified Our Nation—and Could Again. Lincoln, Democracy, and the American Experiment: Allen Guelzo discusses his new book, Our Ancient Faith: Lincoln, Democracy, and the American Experiment. The Constitutional Legacy of Watergate: In honor of the 50th anniversary of Watergate, Garrett Graff discusses Watergate: A New History. 2024 was also the year I launched my new book, The Pursuit of Happiness: How Classical Writers on Virtue Inspired the Lives of the Founders and Defined America. The book launch with The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg at the NCC was especially meaningful. I’ve also had memorable conversations across America—from Elkhart, Indiana to Cookeville, Tennessee—talking to Americans who are rediscovering the rewarding habits of deep reading and lifelong learning. Other unforgettable events at the NCC this year included: 2024 ABC News Presidential Debate: More than 67 million viewers across seven networks tuned in to watch the NCC play host as the 2024 presidential candidates addressed the issues on Americans’ minds. 36th Annual Liberty Medal Ceremony: This year’s ceremony honored acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns for his efforts to illuminate America’s greatest triumphs and tragedies. Constitution 101 Student Course Launch with Khan Academy: Khan Academy founder Sal Khan joined us to launch the student edition of our foundational course on the Constitution, featuring hundreds of conversational interviews with leading experts, hosted on the Khan Academy platform. 2024 National First Amendment Summit: We convened America’s leading First Amendment experts to examine the state of free speech in the courts, on college campuses, and around the globe. As America’s 250th anniversary approaches, all of us at the NCC are working together to lead a nationwide movement as America’s leading platform for nonpartisan civic education and civil dialogue. We’re developing new online resources like our Civic Toolkit on the core principles of the American idea, which will launch next year. We’re also partnering with PBS and presidential libraries to reach new audiences, building new galleries on America’s founding and the separation of powers, and hosting convenings with America’s leading historians on the American experiment. But we can’t do it without you and our community of lifelong learners. Before the year is out, please make a special gift to help us start 2025 with the resources we need to bring accessible civic content and programming to people everywhere. Here’s to another year of light, learning and deep reading!
