Dear John, Last night, like so many of you, I lit the Hanukkah candles with my family, sang the prayers, and felt that moment of deep gratitude as I looked at my children, my wife, and yes, our fluffy dog.
As we ate we talked about charitable giving and where we each wanted to make year-end donations. The discussion was wide ranging and included some organizations that are regulars for us (like Habonim Dror and Young Judaea-shout out to youth movements who build leaders) and others like the Trevor Project and World Central Kitchen. What connects us, as individuals, to an organization? There are of course many answers, but one important one is that we are connected to the story that they tell and that we are a part of the narrative that they weave. I make this distinction because a story can be something that we listen to passively, but a narrative is something that we craft together. And friends, as we work to build a New Jewish Narrative, we will do so together. That is why, today, I am asking you to do two important things. First, please make a gift to New Jewish Narrative. Your financial support is what enables us to do the work of peace making and community building - the advocacy, the policy monitoring, the education and the outreach. Without you, and without your partnership, none of this is possible. Together, we are stronger and better prepared for the fights ahead.
Second, I’d really like to hear from you. Please respond to this email and tell me what you are looking for from our work, what you want to see, and how you want to add your voice to our collective narrative. Because what we are building, we are building together. The voice that we are raising is not mine, but ours. And the story that we will tell belongs to all of us. So please, make a gift today, and send me a note. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Chag Sameach and Happy New Year,
