Recent news has made it clear: The Trump administration stands poised to advance authoritarianism by abusing executive power, politicizing independent institutions, crushing dissent and scapegoating vulnerable communities.

And they’ll infringe on freedom of the press and free speech to evade accountability for eroding civil-rights protections and democratic norms — all the while funneling billions in taxpayer dollars to Trump’s inner circle of billionaire grifters.

In 2025, Free Press’ and Free Press Action’s teams of public-policy lawyers and advocates will be at the forefront of defending free speech and civil and human rights. As the inauguration draws closer, know this:

* Free Press will not sit idly by while the FCC and other government bodies are used to advance authoritarianism. We are prepared to shine a light on their actions and to expose their corruption in the court of public opinion as well as in the courts of law.

* Free Press will disrupt and delay the Trump administration’s rollbacks to decades of progressive wins. We’ll continue fighting to ensure that the internet can be a democratizing force for free expression and will oppose the concentration of media power in the hands of billionaires. We’ll build power with regular people to make their voices heard in the decisions that shape our media system. We’ll put out big, bold ideas that will help achieve the just and equitable media system we want, and will generate power and enthusiasm behind those models.

* Free Press will expose authoritarian tactics used to suppress dissent and censor the media and the people, and will unmask the billionaire owners, hate-spewing pundits and complicit politicians who seek to destroy democracy. We will refuse to normalize authoritarianism — and the bigotry and violence that fuels it — and will reject the media corporations and tech platforms that voluntarily comply with Trump’s regime.

* Free Press will challenge government policies that bless media consolidation and reduce quality journalism — and will work to destabilize the far right’s use of our media system to advance authoritarianism.

We’re under no illusion that next year won’t be one of the most challenging (and busy) we’ve faced.
