1) Trump Must Fix Our Criminal Justice System

We do believe in the maxim that if you commit a crime, you do the time. And we do know that Mayor Rudy Giuliani reduced the crime rate dramatically in New York City by punishing even small crimes.

But here is the conundrum for our criminal justice system:

The most recent data available show that with more than 1.8 million Americans in jail or prison, the U.S. has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world.

[link removed]

At the same time, the U.S. has a shockingly high recidivism rate.

Roughly two of three people released from prison in 24 different states are rearrested within three years, and 80% after five years.

If one of the goals of prison is to serve as a deterrent to committing future crimes - that strategy is a clear and tragic failure. Prison isn't deterring crime and it isn't rehabilitating young criminals. It's creating a professional class of criminals. Those who are incarcerated are breaking bad.

Violent criminals need to be behind bars to protect the safety of citizens.

However, many are in jail for drug offenses. The conditions in American prisons are often cruel and do nothing to create functional citizens.

Trump should launch a program of prison reform so that we can give people who do bad things when they are young a second chance. One such program is Promising People ([link removed]) , a program that provides real job training for convicts so they can turn away from crime and have a second chance in life.

2) Krugman: "Biden Handled Economy Extremely Well"

Here is how economist Paul Krugman, who is retiring from the New York Times, predicts history will judge Joe Biden's presidency:

Here's the deeply unpopular opinion that will, I think, become orthodoxy a few decades from now, which is that Biden and his team actually managed the economy extremely well...

Obama went too soft, too weak on the economy in 2009...And Biden said they understood"... that they really had one shot at taking strong measures. And so... they spent a lot of money, which temporarily boosted inflation, although in the end, cumulative inflation in the U.S. is similar to that -- of the whole rest of the world.

[link removed]

This is a repeat of the left's fairy tale that the reason Obama was a failed president is that he "only" spent and borrowed $800 billion in his stimulus plan. It was too SMALL, says Krugman. So then, Biden took Krugman's advice and spent four times more - which plunged the middle class underwater.

How does Krugman explain the Trump election? You will love this:

If you look at who voted which way in the election, basically people who pay attention to the news supported Harris by a strong margin, and people who don't supported Trump by a strong margin.

Apparently, Americans were just too stupid to appreciate the Biden presidency, and if only they would read the New York Times, they would recognize how "extremely well" he managed the economy.

Thanks to our friends at Media Research Center ([link removed]) for again highlighting the Krugman arrogance.

3) Let There Be Light

Trump says he wants to end Daylight Saving Time:

[link removed]

We believe he has it exactly wrong: we should make yearlong daylight savings time the default setting and let states decide if they want to opt-out.

Allison Schrager argues in Bloomberg:

America actually did adopt permanent DST during the energy crisis of 1974 -- and it was unpopular in part because people didn't like sending their kids to school in the dark. The experiment, which was supposed to last two years, was canceled after 10 months.

Things have changed a lot since then. There has been a significant migration to the South in the last half century, meaning there are fewer people who would have to deal with the dark mornings and more businesses that would benefit from lighter evenings.

[link removed]

Under current law, states have a choice of operating on year-round standard time or part-time daylight saving time. Why not offer them the third choice of year-round daylight time so it doesn't get dark at 5 o'clock?

4) The IRS Sent Out $2.4 BIllion in COVID Stimulus Checks THIS Week

Will someone please tell the Biden IRS that COVID ended about four years ago?

Here's a headline for the laugh or cry file:

[link removed]

Outgoing IRS commissioner Danny Werfel explained:

To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we're making these payments automatic, meaning these people will not be required to go through the extensive process of filing an amended return to receive it.

Great, except the infamous IRS bureaucracy almost certainly sent plenty of checks to people who were not eligible. Or to people who intentionally declined stimulus payments.

Why would we trust an agency that took almost half a decade to get stimulus payments out the door to get it right?

5) A Good Explanation Why Europe Is Economically Comatose

You can quibble about whether China is really leading in 5G or whether it's contested, but what rings absolutely true here is that the Europeans are falling way behind. Their only recourse is to bring antitrust lawsuits against America.

Which raises an obvious question: why do so many politicians and bureaucrats want to make America more like the EU?
