Here in Taiwan, where I live and work, being homosexual isn’t a crime. But in many parts of Asia, and countless countries around the world, LGBTIQ individuals are excluded from protections against domestic and family violence. Too often, this violence is hidden behind cultural practices, making it difficult for many to even recognize it as abuse.

But our LGBTIQ family doesn’t have to face this problem alone.

Thanks to Outright’s Asia network — spanning 19 countries — LGBTIQ activists share strategies, expertise, model interventions, and hope, strengthening each other’s efforts to address abuse in their communities. In the Philippines, for example, in addition to advocacy, Outright and our partners train service providers — police officers, social workers and psychologists — to be LGBTQ culturally competent when LGBTQ people access the protection system.

This program is driving real change in the Philippines and serves as a prototype for other parts of Asia… and countries around the world. But this progress doesn’t happen without action.
