John,
2024 has been a record year – unfortunately so for the climate but thanks to the power of Green Party members, it was also a record year for Green politics in England and Wales.
Here are six records we can be proud of:
1. Winning a record number of MPs
The establishment parties were shocked. Pollsters didn't see it coming. The media were aghast. Our four MPs are making their mark. In the intake of hundreds of new MPs, Green MPs are standing out and having an outsized impact in holding a timid Labour Government to account to lead the change people are crying out for.
2. Winning a record vote share at the General Election In securing nearly 2 million votes, a record number of voters backed the Greens this year in every corner of the country. Greens came ahead of what used to be the 'third party', the Lib Dems, in half of all constituencies. The call for real climate action, a public NHS, clean water and an equal country, was louder than ever.
3. Winning a record number of Green councillors
May saw us rise to a record number of councillors, growing to over 810 in England and Wales. We saw a new record high in the number of councillors on any one council - electing 34 in Bristol - and making huge strides forward and breakthroughs elsewhere like in Newcastle, Merseyside and Worcestershire.
4. A record number of Greens in power May also took us to a record high in the number of councils where Greens are in administration. On 43 councils, over 10% of all councils in England and Wales, Green cabinet members or committee chairs are making decisions on local services. We're implementing robust climate action strategies, bringing public services back into public hands, investing pension funds ethically, tackling poverty and loneliness, building new council homes and recovering natural habitats.
5. A record voter share nationally Never before have Greens consistently secured a continuously high vote share in national opinion polls. We end the year on around 8% of the national vote, even higher than our General Election vote share. This continuous and growing support shows the Labour Government that the public will keep on shifting their vote if they don't see the right political action.
Bristol Greens became the largest group on the council with a record 34 councillors
6. A record number of people of colour voted Green At the General Election in July, the Green voter coalition included more people of colour, by percentage, than the voter base for any of the other mainstream political parties. As Greens, we are naturally committed to diversifying our member, supporter and voter base so we can be sure we are speaking for all in society.
These records are all thanks to Green Party members and supporters. Greens are a party entirely powered by members and supporters - through giving time and money to enable us to take on the status quo. Greens are a party of change. People like our message and the other parties know it. Thank you for your support in powering us to success this year. In 2025, your support will help power us to wins at the county council elections, removing Conservatives from power in councils they still control.
We wish you the very best for the festive season.
