KTLA 5 New synthetic drug three times stronger than fentanyl linked to LA County death A new synthetic drug considered three times more powerful than fentanyl is being blamed for at least one death in Los Angeles. Protonitazene is so potent, the Food and Drug Administration never approved it. "This drug is illegal in the United States, has no medically accepted uses," said Bill Bodner, a retired Drug Enforcement Administration agent. The drug is finding its way into the community. A case last month in Los Angeles federal court charged one man for distributing the drug. "This is the first confirmed protonitazene death-resulting case in the nation. Protonitazine is quickly emerging as a fentanyl replacement and it is three times more fatal," court documents stated. In that case, Benjamin Anthony Collins, 21, of Santa Clarita, allegedly sold the victim pills containing protonitazene and arranged to sell him a bulk supply, the U.S. attorney's office said in a news release. Joshua Daniel McGinn, 41, a teacher at Charter Oak High School in Covina, faces charges including four felony counts of oral copulation on a minor, a felony count of sexual penetration by use of force, two felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and one felony count of possession of child pornography, Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman announced in a news release Tuesday. “Prosecutors from our Sex Crimes Division are working tirelessly to ensure justice is served for the victims and their families,” Hochman said in the release. “We also want to encourage anyone who may have additional information or has been victimized to come forward and report information to the Covina Police Department.” McGinn was arrested on Dec. 18 and is being held without bail, officials said. He’s scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 6. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 13 years and six months in prison. Los Angeles Times CHP nabs 117 in statewide organized retail theft crackdown A statewide crackdown on organized retail theft resulted in 117 arrests and the recovery of $38,000 in stolen merchandise last week, according to officials. Two illegal guns and three stolen vehicles were also seized as part of Operation Holiday Watch, which was carried out Friday by the California Highway Patrol and police departments around the Golden State, the California Governor’s Office said in a news release. The Livermore, San Ramon and Walnut Creek police departments were among the 10 law enforcement agencies that participated in the crackdown, according to officials. The suspects are expected to face charges ranging from petty theft and grand theft to organized retail theft, officials said. “Through proactive enforcement operations and strong partnerships with local law enforcement and retailers, we were able to protect the state’s businesses and consumers during one of the busiest times of the year,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said in a statement. “Our efforts send a clear message that retail theft in California will not be tolerated,” he said. PoliceOne California man arrested on suspicion of beheading 1-year-old son, authorities say A Sacramento County father has been arrested on suspicion of beheading his 1-year-old son, sheriff’s officials said. Andrey Demskiy, 28, was arrested and booked Friday on felony charges of murder, assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury, and corporal injury on a spouse in connection with the child’s death, according to authorities and jail records. He is being held in the Sacramento County Main Jail and is ineligible for bail. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a family disturbance call at a house in the 7500 block of Versailles Way in Sacramento County early Friday morning, sheriff’s officials said on social media. A woman outside the home told them that her husband, Andrey Demskiy, had assaulted her and her mother, who was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies then attempted to contact Demskiy but he refused to answer the door, authorities said. When they learned that a 1-year-old boy was inside the home and had possibly been injured, deputies forced entry and attempted to detain Demskiy, who resisted, authorities said. Los Angeles Times California inmate recruited ‘wives’ to spread fentanyl across Alaska, feds say As Sunday Powers drove along a remote highway in Alaska, her boss tracked her every move from 3,000 miles away. A former Girl Scout raised in a town called North Pole, population 2,427, Powers had gotten involved in the drug business. She sold blue fentanyl pills and smuggled money for a dealer in California, according to court documents and interviews. Powers had never met her boss, Heraclio Sanchez Rodriguez — he had been serving a life sentence in the California prison system since 1998. Authorities charge that Sanchez ran one of the largest drug trafficking organizations in Alaska history without ever setting foot in the state. Using contraband cellphones, Sanchez spun a web that stretched from Mexico to Los Angeles to far-flung Alaska villages, authorities say. Flights carried women traveling with drugs and cash. Packages stuffed with fentanyl pills flowed through the U.S. postal system. Cash App payments linked senders in Alaska to recipients in Mexicali and Culiacán. “This guy’s very intelligent,” Powers’ brother, Charles Hills, said of Sanchez. “He created a network and bought his way into enough circles of trust, whatever you want to call it, and just destroyed the area.” Los Angeles Times 16-year-old arrested after S.C. police K-9 shot, killed One teenager was arrested and there’s a search for two more who are wanted following a stolen car chase that ended early Monday morning when a police dog was shot and killed, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. “The whole sheriff’s department is very sad that we lost one of our police dogs,” Sheriff Leon Lott said Monday at a news conference. “Very sad, but also very mad.” Lott said K9 Bumi was killed, becoming the department’s third police dog to die in the line of duty this year. The department also had another police dog that survived being shot on the job, but had to medically retire, according to Lott. “These dogs are out here protecting the community,” Lott said. The incident began near the 7400 block of Parklane Road a little before 2:30 a.m. , when a deputy spotted a car that had been reported stolen in Columbia on Sunday, according to the sheriff. A chase followed that Lott said ended in the Greenview community after a deputy used a stop stick to deflate the stolen vehicle’s tires. Two teenagers ran away, while a 16-year-old was stopped from getting out of the vehicle and was detained at gunpoint, according to Lott. According to a post on X, the Coast Guard called off the search due to "no signs of distress" and "no response to UMIB [Urgent Marine Information Broadcast.]" According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the two men were supposed to be picked up by a friend early Tuesday morning at the Cabrillo Marina but did not show up at the boat ramp. Crews began a search that morning and found a boat up against the rocks near the 1800 block of Paseo Del Mar, but the men were not found, the fire department said. The Coast Guard and the Long Beach Fire Department were also involved in the search. Due to extremely low fog, rescue crews weren't able to fly their helicopter. Officials said the hazardous conditions have not made the search easy. The two men's names have not been released but authorities described them as being in their 50s. ABC 7 Bird flu detected in pets' raw food, LA County Public Health warns Los Angeles County health officials warned residents Tuesday not to feed their pets raw food following a voluntary recall of Northwest Naturals Brand 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe Raw & Frozen Pet Food due to detection of H5 bird flu virus in product samples. The county Department of Public Health said the recalled products are packaged 2-pound plastic bags with "Best if used by" dates of May 21, 2026, B10 and June 23, 2026, B1. Pet owners were urged to immediately dispose of those products. Residents who fed their pets the recalled products or other raw meat or dairy products and notice their pet experiencing symptoms should immediately contact their veterinarian.
