The 2024 Year in Review from ADL: Challenging Times and Moments of Hope During the Past Year

Dear Friends,

As I reflect on the end of the long year that has been 2024, two words come to mind first. ‘Challenges’ and ‘Community.’ Or possibly just ‘good riddance.’ But before we turn the page, it’s important to reflect on the work that the ADL community did this year in the face of such upheaval. I am so grateful to our dedicated professional staff, our amazing volunteer leadership, our generous donors and everyone else who speaks up and shows up to fight hate for good in your neighborhood, online, on campus and everywhere that antisemitism and other forms of bigotry and extremism must not go unanswered.

We entered 2024 with the sobering realization that in the three months since the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel, U.S. antisemitic incidents rose dramatically, foreshadowing a trend that would play out through the year. As I noted then, “the American Jewish community is facing a threat level that’s now unprecedented in modern history.”

Supporting Jewish Students in Philadelphia K-12 Schools: In

an agreement with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, the largest school district in Pennsylvania has signed off on a resolution that finds that the district failed to prove that it protected Jewish students despite “repeated, extensive notice” of antisemitic behavior in district schools. This resolution resolves allegations against the School District of Philadelphia that were

raised by ADL in a complaint filed in July 2024. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt praised Jewish students and parents “who had the courage to speak out against the pattern of antisemitic harassment, abuse and bullying.” The resolution includes a

lengthy list of steps that the school district has agreed to.

NEW SURVEY: K-12 Students and Antisemitism: Seventy-one percent of Jewish parents and 37 percent of non-Jewish parents surveyed reported that their child witnessed or experienced antisemitism in K-12 classrooms or through course materials, according to a survey released by the ADL Center for Antisemitism Research. This represents more than a third of all parents. The findings also reveal a strong correlation between students' access to Holocaust and antisemitism education and their ability to recognize antisemitic incidents when they occur.

NY’s “Stop Hiding Act” Passes: Earlier this week, NY Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law an important social media transparency bill that ADL has been an outspoken advocate for. The new law (S895/A6789) requires greater transparency regarding content moderation protocols from major social media platforms, helping to ensure accountability and hopefully create a safer social media environment for all users. We are grateful for the hard work of State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Assembly Member Grace Lee for working with ADL and other community organizations and constituents across New York to take this step towards greater internet transparency and safety. Antisemitic tropes, such as the notion that Jews are disloyal or are enemies of Christianity, led to horrific pogroms in Russia in the 19th and 20th centuries, which resulted in the massacre of thousands of innocent Russian Jews. This is precisely why it’s so jarring to hear Russian Pres. Putin’s absurd statement that “ethnic” Jews are attacking the Russian Orthodox Church. Not only is this a blatant lie, but it also reeks of the virulently antisemitic propaganda used by Stalin and other failed Russian dictators. Putin needs to stop blaming his country’s Jews for his own failings — before it’s too late.
