John,
In the newest episode of our Follow the Data podcast series, infectious disease expert Dr. Arturo Casadevall discusses how blood plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients could be used to treat and prevent the disease in others.
Dr. Casadevall is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University. He joins Dr. Jessica Leighton from the Bloomberg Philanthropies public health team to explore the possibilities -- and challenges -- facing this potential treatment.
The results so far are promising. Find out more by listening to the full conversation:
Dr. Casadevall and Dr. Leighton touch on the uses of blood plasma treatments in previous outbreaks, the research taking place today, and how long it might take to determine its effectiveness in treating sick patients and boosting the immune systems of health care workers and first responders.
To support this endeavor, Bloomberg Philanthropies is teaming up with Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and Johns Hopkins University to fund the research and teams working on developing this therapy.
